The Level Up Program

Students must meet all of the established eligibility criteria to be considered for participation in the Level Up Program. This includes a nomination by a teacher, guidance counselor or administrator.

The Level Up Program at Mattawan High School, led by a building coordinator and funded by the Mattawan Public Education Foundation, creates pathways to college for first-generation students by providing guidance, resources, and individualized support from sophomore year to the transition to college acceptance. Built on the belief that talent is universal but opportunity is not, Level Up works to remove barriers and equip students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to achieve their postsecondary goals.

Level Up meetings take place during the school day during Seminar, providing students with consistent access to support and mentorship throughout the school year. Students participate in college campus visits, cultural field trips, and receive personalized support with college applications and FAFSA completion, gaining practical tools to successfully navigate the college process. They also connect with guest speakers and mentors who provide insight into financial aid, college readiness, leadership, confidence-building, and lifelong success skills.

In addition to academic and college support, Level Up helps meet the individual needs of students so they can fully participate in the high school experience. Whether it is providing graduation gowns, new shoes for a school dance, or assistance accessing dental care, the program ensures students feel supported, valued, and empowered to do their very best. For many students, Level Up has become more than a program- it is their “school family.”
